THE PROBLEM
The credit repair industry is a $4 billion business built on the fact that most people don't know what you're about to read. They charge $1,000 - $3,000 for things you can do yourself - for free - in an afternoon. This playbook gives you the exact same steps in plain English.

THE FULL SYSTEM

Go to OptOutPrescreen.com and opt out permanently. This stops the credit bureaus from selling your data to lenders - and stops those hard inquiries from piling up every time a credit card company "pre-screens" you. Takes 5 minutes. Do it today.
Add your utility bills, phone bill, and streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) to your Experian credit report for free. Most people see an immediate score jump - and it takes about 5 minutes to set up at experian.com/boost.
Your rent is probably your biggest monthly payment - and it's not on your credit report. Fix that at CreditRentBoost.com. It reports to all 3 bureaus and can add significant points fast. This is one of the most underused tools in credit building.
Payment history is 35% of your FICO score. One late payment can drop your score 50 - 100 points. Set up auto-pay for at least the minimum on every account so you never miss a due date. This is the single most important habit in this entire playbook.
Your credit utilization - how much of your available credit you're using - accounts for 30% of your score. The ideal range is 10 - 25%. If you're above that, pay down balances before your statement closes each month.
Ask a family member with a long-standing, low-balance credit card to add you as an authorized user. Their good history gets added to your report - even if you never use the card. This is one of the fastest ways to add positive history.
Every new credit application triggers a hard inquiry, which can drop your score 5 - 10 points each. Space out applications by at least 6 months. Multiple accounts opened at once sends a red flag to lenders that you may be in financial distress.
Find out when each credit card reports to the bureaus (call and ask, or check your online account). Pay your balance down before that date - not just before the due date. This lowers the balance that gets reported, which lowers your utilization instantly.
No credit check required. You deposit money as collateral, use it like a regular card, and Chime reports your payments to the bureaus. It's one of the fastest ways to build or rebuild credit from scratch with zero risk of going into debt.
The age of your credit history matters. Closing an old account shortens your average account age and can hurt your score. Keep old cards open - even if you don't use them. Put a small recurring charge on them so they stay active and don't get closed by the issuer.
Get your free report at AnnualCreditReport.com. If you find errors, dispute them - BUT if you're applying for an FHA, VA, or USDA loan, DO NOT dispute anything. Disputes can delay or kill a government loan approval. Text Keith before disputing anything.
Knock out the smallest balances first. This reduces the number of accounts with balances - which is a separate scoring factor - and builds momentum. Even paying a $200 balance to zero can move your score more than you expect.
Put two calendar reminders for every credit card: the due date AND the bureau reporting date. Most people only track due dates. Tracking reporting dates lets you time your payments for maximum score impact each month.
Even if you plan to pay more, set up the auto-minimum as a safety net. One missed payment because you forgot is all it takes to undo months of progress. Automate the floor, then pay extra manually whenever you can.
eCredable Lift reports your utility bills, phone, and internet payments to TransUnion. If you're paying these on time every month, you deserve credit for it. This is a fast, underused score booster that most people have never heard of.
Self Financial lets you build credit while saving money. You make monthly payments into a "credit builder account," they report to all 3 bureaus, and at the end you get the money back (minus fees). Great for thin credit files or starting from scratch.
That 20% off coupon at checkout isn't worth the hard inquiry hit. Store cards typically have high APRs, low limits, and hurt your score more than they help. Decline them every single time. The savings are never worth the damage.
Old collections hurt your score less over time. Paying a collection doesn't always remove it - and can sometimes restart the clock. Don't pay any collection without a plan. Text Keith before you do anything with a collection account.
Before paying any collection, send a written pay-for-delete letter asking the collector to remove the account from your report in exchange for payment. Get it in writing and confirmed before you send a single dollar. This is non-negotiable.
Free credit monitoring apps show you VantageScore - but mortgage lenders use FICO. These are different scores and can vary by 50+ points. MyFICO.com shows you the exact score your lender will see. Know your real number before you apply.
